When Aloha Airlines ceased operations last April one of the many losses was their Explorers Youth Program. This program brings high school age students behind the scenes at an airline to be exposed to a variety of areas in aviation. Island Air stepped up to the plate and took over the Explorers Program.
Over the past 10 weeks Island Air employees (among others) volunteered their own time to show these kids all kinds of things that go on in an airline operation. Some example topics: flight attendants, pilots, dispatch, operations, maintenance, TSA, ATC, airport crash and rescue, and more... Sounds awesome huh? You can read the official description of the program here.
Last night was the graduation ceremony for the first class of Island Air Explorers, CONGRATULATIONS to all involved... This group ROCKED the Kolohe Korner!
Don't worry, this first pic is Island Air volunteers, not high school students...

One of the counselors, Lance (he's a Captain), had eye surgery on a Monday and was at Explorers on that Wednesday, eye patch and all. Needless to say the kids got a kick out of that one.

A HUGE mahalo goes out to everyone involved in this program. In my opinion it was a 110% success! If you are involved in the Explorers Program click here.
